Are you preparing for the arrival of your little one and overwhelmed by everything that is out there?

There are many things you actually don't need. But here are a few of my must have's as a Registered Nurse, Lactation Counselor, and mom of two little ones.

Sleep

  • Crib or bassinet
  • A firm infant mattress
  • Infant mattress protector
  • Breathable crib sheets
  • Monitor
  • A good swaddle
    • Newborns can be swaddled until they roll over, or usually around three months of age.
    • My favorite is the Ollie Swaddle - velcro is a lifesaver for middle of the night re-swaddling. My favorite is the Ollie Swaddle - velcro is a lifesaver for middle of the night re-swaddling.

Breastfeeding

Newborn Care

  • Car seat - you cannot leave the hospital without one!!
  • Diapers
    • It's good to have size newborn (NB) and size 1 diapers on hand.
    • If you deliver in hospital, they often will send you home with some!
  • Plenty of wipes!!
  • Gas drops
  • Rectal thermometer - taking your baby's temperature rectally is the most accurate
    • I like this one
  • Nasal spray
    • Newborns get congested easily, which can make it difficult to feed and breathe. Having saline drops on hand are a must!
    • My favorite: Little Remedies
  • Infant fever reducer
    • If your baby is under 3 months old, any fever over 100.4 requires a visit to your pediatrician.
    • Any dosage for a fever reducer is weight-based, so you should consult with your pediatrician to confirm the correct dosage.
    • My favorite brand of infant acetaminophen: Genexa
  • Nail trimmer or filer-

For the Parents

  • A really good nursery chair/glider
    • You will probably pass many hours in this chair, so make it a one you love.
  • Comfortable pajamas for mom
    • Postpartum recovery can be difficult, but some easy loungewear can add comfort. If you're breastfeeding, make sure you have easy access for nursing.
    • Check out sets from Kindred Bravely
      • Kindred Bravely also makes nursing bras and nursing friendly shirts\dresses, and much more!
